Introduction to e-portfolios for Graduate Students Workshop

This workshop details the rudimentary plans on how to develop and manage e-portfolios. The three lessons I learnt were first, learning how to develop and write an academic informed portfolio for my career purpose. Secondly, I learnt how to update my e-portfolio and customize the background of my writings. Thirdly, I learnt how to link my portfolio to my other social networks and how to upload items, such as CV to my e-portfolio. My advice to a colleague is; even after the initial creation of the portfolio, it is pivotal to continually update it as you advance in your career/profession. Having an e-portfolio has greatly improved my professional skills and readiness by exposing me an efficient, more accessible and wholesome way to tell other people who I am and what I do.

Grant Writing Workshop

This workshop introduces the step to step guide to follow when writing and applying for grants in a competitive environment. I learnt that it is important to ensure that the goal of a grant I apply for tallies with my work/research aims and what it looks to achieve. I learnt the vitality to start applying early, and submit few days before the deadline to plan for unforeseen contingencies. I also learnt that having another person(s) reread you grant proposal improves clarity, good feedback and over quality of the grant proposal. I will like to know more about how to review grants for future proposes. The experience has significantly improved my academic/professional grant writing skills and rationale.

Teaching Large Classes Workshop

The workshop exposes strategies for teaching/and to improve on teaching large classes as a tutor. Lessons learnt include: Knowing that every student learn differently and factoring that in teaching style; Having control over the classroom by adopting engaging teaching methods for properly engage the students, Speaking clearly and loud enough so that every student can hear and participate more effectively. One advice for a colleague will be to make efforts in understanding and appreciating each student learning prowess so as to leverage their best learning outcomes. This workshop has improved my preparation to properly teach a large class and help students grow in their academic endeavors.

Effective Strategies for Grading Workshop

The workshop shows effective and efficient methods on how to grade students assignments and explains strategies in grading fairly and properly. Lesson learnt: Always have a grading rubric to help maintain a concise and fair grading style; Its better to start grading early and do it batch by batch than waiting till the semester’s end; Try and make comments that expresses what you appreciate in a student’s writing/ assignment and what you think needs to improved on. One advice for a colleague will be, be on top of your grading game to reduce the end of the semester load and rush. The workshop has further prepared me on how to be an excellent grader for my career purposes.

Copyright or Copywrong Workshop

The workshop teaches ways to properly give ownership accolades for academic work, how to avoid plagiarism and take proper steps to obtain copyright for your professional/academic properties. Lesson learnt; Understand that writing my course materials does not automatically makes it my property and that it could be my university’s property; Before using visual materials (tables, figures) in a copyright book, article and so on, I have to gain approval from the author(s) of the material; Always ensure to get a copyright for any material I publish. Something I will like to further understand is how to know when your course materials are your property or your university property.

Appreciating and Leveraging Diversity Workshop

This workshop details the pivotal role diversity play in advancing human value, idea sharing in the work environment, and student learning outcomes. Lesson learnt; incorporate diversity informed styles in your work and teaching method so that they encourage diverse opinions; Expressly state your diversity and inclusion expectations verbally and in your syllabus to help students get initial information on respecting and appreciating diversity; You can invite a diversity expert to discuss more on the importance of diversity in the workplace environment to prepare students for workforce expectations. One advice for a colleague will be to help students/other colleagues see that understanding and leveraging diversity and inclusion can be a great advantage to them because it widens their learning horizon and helps them better understand and flourish in day-to-day life endeavors with others and in their career pursuits.
